Not long after Jamie promised he’d help Theo overcome his fear of water, they gave in to sleep. Or at least, Jamie fell asleep. Theo couldn’t stop thinking about what he’d done. It hadn’t been planned, but he wouldn’t take it back. He wanted it to be Jamie encouraging him.

Maybe it was the teacher in Jamie, but Theo felt in good hands.

For a few fleeting moments, he worried. He’d trusted Sam with his story once, and look how that had turned out. Was he stupid to risk another potential punch to his core?

That was the question he drifted off to.

He woke to someone moving around the bedroom. Jamie was already up and showered, his wet hair dripping onto his shoulders. He had already slipped on jeans, but he was shirtless and the sunshine seeping through the crack in the curtains made the stray rivulets of water running down his chest glow.

Theo tucked his hands behind his head and watched until Jamie, without looking, threw his wet towel at him.

“Stop staring and shower before Mom gets in and the hot water runs out.”

Theo rolled out of bed with a groan and snapped the towel against Jamie’s ass, startling him into a jump. “Now we’re even,” Theo said as Jamie’s lips ticked up.

Theo peered at the shirt options winking at him from the open drawer. “You haven’t worn this one before.”

He pulled out a red T-shirt encased in plastic tucked at the side of the drawer. He tugged it out of the plastic, the material soft and the color a never-been-worn vibrant red with a splash of black lettering. JLM. He’d never seen Jamie wear red. He measured the shirt against Jamie. “You’re not religious are you, or have I missed something?”

Jamie snatched the T-shirt, but not in the playful way Theo was expecting. With a frown, he stuffed it under the others in his drawer.

Theo spared him a questioning look.

“Not religious,” Jamie said.

“So… JLM? Just Like Me?”

Jamie stared at his T-shirts. “Yes. That one doesn’t fit right.”

Theo didn’t believe him. “Would fit me, though. Maybe I can borrow it?”

Jamie visibly tensed.

“Alternatively,” Theo said, gesturing to his nicely shaped torso, “forget the shirt and wear only that. Leone would approve.”

Jamie snapped out of whatever painful reverie he had been sucked into. “I’m sure my mother wouldn’t.”

“Pity. Now where do I find a dry towel?”
